Chapter Twenty-Four

After meeting with Terrell Werner, Carolina was livid. She explained what went down to Max, and telling him they were on their own. After he talked her down the two tried to hatch a new plan, but despite hours of brainstorming they were stuck.

Max offered to take her out, to get her mind off things but that was the opposite of what Carolina wanted. She needed to find a crack, a hole, something she could exploit. As she tossed and turned in bed, she kept coming up empty.

She knew she should text Bea and tell her what was happening—or not happening. Part of her even wanted to ask their mother if she was aware of Scarlet’s secret life. Maybe she knew some of Scarlet’s contacts in that world. After all, what else would the two of them talk about twice weekly?

But she wasn’t up for her mother tonight. She wasn’t up for anything but escape.

Carolina grabbed the stolen bottle of Percocet, now two thirds empty, and shook three into her palm. Just before she could take them, she put one back. She still hadn’t talked to any of her doctors and secured her own supply so she needed to ration them.

After dropping the two pills on her tongue, she ground them between her teeth, relishing the sweet release that came seconds later.

It all faded. Her weeks in Monacan, Der Todesbringer, all the dead girls. Lester. Her pain went away too, like someone was slowly turning the faucet that allowed misery to flow through her body unabated.

The stress, the anxiety, the depression, the fear, all her emotions dulled to the point where they no longer existed and she eagerly floated into the fog of nothingness.
